Camden Home Oxygen Service (HOS-AR)

Oxygen therapy is used for the treatment of hypoxia and may be required for management of COPD, chronic asthma, cardiac conditions, neurological conditions, paediatric or neonatal conditions and palliative conditions.

Oxygen prescribing should be initiated by specialists. In Camden, this service is provided by CNWL. The COPD and Home Oxygen Service is an assessment and review service (HOS-AR). Patients with COPD can be referred to the HOS-AR team for oxygen assessment and initiation. Patients with other conditions will need to be assessed for oxygen initiation by a relevant specialist in secondary care, but will be reviewed by the HOS-AR team once oxygen has been initiated.

Home oxygen is supplied to patients by Air Liquide. Very occasionally GPs may order oxygen for a patient, only if they feel they have adequate expertise to take clinical responsibility for the prescription. The Camden HOS-AR team would follow up with these patients at home four weeks post initiation. Oxygen prescriptions have no expiry. Once oxygen is initiated for a patient, the prescription will continue until a clinician authorises it to be stopped. GPs and other non-specialists can only prescribe a basic static concentrator and cylinders.

If a patient requires specialist equipment (e.g. portable oxygen), the patient should be referred for assessment to identify the most suitable equipment to order and a specialist should prescribe it.

See Camden GP Home Oxygen Referral Pathway and Prescribing Guidance for Management of Oxygen Patients for more details.
