Routine secondary care referrals for the majority of conditions go via Camden Clinical Assessment Service (CCAS) using the e-Referrals service (formally known as Choose and Book). They are peer-reviewed by a local GP colleague with specialist knowledge of pathways and services.
The service aims to ensure that referrals to secondary care are appropriate and to make it easy for patients to book their hospital appointments. CCAS will contact patients to book appointments, providing a choice of any hospital in England as long as it is clinically appropriate.
Referrals are reviewed against NICE Guidance, Camden Pathways, Camden CCG Service Access Criteria and the policies for Individual Funding Requests (IFR) and Procedures of Limited Clinical Effectiveness (PoLCE).
CCAS GP reviewers may send back your referral with comments for you to review if it doesn’t fit these guidelines. For more information about making better referrals, see Making Better Referrals.
