Camden MSK has been receiving a number of queries regarding referrals for specialist surgical appliances which are sometimes referred to as orthotics.
Nationally, there is a degree of confusion around the classification of orthotics and who provides them, so Camden MSK would like to clarify the following.
Camden MSK are contracted to provide podiatry, which is currently provided by CNWL. Patients who have been referred to podiatry may be prescribed insoles which, for reference, we refer to as orthotics.
Camden MSK’s podiatrists are not contracted to provide anything other than insole orthotics. This means that surgical appliances and specialist footwear are not prescribed by Camden MSK health professionals as more specialist equipment is needed for assessment and provision. Surgical appliances and custom made shoes are provided by the acute trusts and require a consultant referral.
If your patient has a musculoskeletal condition and requires specialist footwear or any kind of surgical appliance you can refer to the Camden MSK Single Point of Access. These referrals will receive a clinical triage and if appropriate be sent to Orthopaedics in UCLH or RFL. It would be helpful to the Camden MSK clinical triage if you can specify where your patients has previously received their surgical appliances so they can be directed appropriately.
Please note that if the patient referred for surgical appliances does not have a musculoskeletal condition they will not meet the acceptance criteria for Camden MSK and will be redirected back to the referrer. These referrals should be sent to CCAS who will forward to the appropriate acute service for the patient’s condition. Again it would be helpful if you can specify where your patients have previously received their surgical appliances to they can be directed appropriately.
